Stem cell transplants are a treatment for some types of cancer, including leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma. They are sometimes called stem cell rescue, bone marrow rescue, or intensive treatment. Stem cell transplants don't usually work directly against cancer, but instead help the body produce new blood cells after chemotherapy or radiation therapy have destroyed cancer cells. The goal of the transplant is to replace damaged or non-healthy bone marrow cells with new, healthy stem cells. The transplant can also give the patient a new immune system that can attack tumor cells and help eradicate any remaining disease. This immune response can reduce the risk of the disease returning Stem cells are also recommended for post-cancer treatment to help prevent relapse and aid the body in regaining its strength.
